Course Description The course is designed to further develop students' proficiency and communication in Modern Standard Arabic in the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The main objective of this course is to enhance the students' abilities to understand spoken Arabic, to converse on a variety of topics (e.g. the press, literature, social aspects, education, etc.), narrate, discuss and read authentic material in Arabic. More attention will at this level be paid to discussion and conversing in Arabic. In addition to focusing on MSA, some material in dialectal Arabic will be presented from time to time. This course builds on previous knowledge from previous courses on Arabic.
Textbook and Media resources - Brustad, et. al. (2001). Al-Kitaab fi Ta cAllum Al-cArabiyya: A Textbook for Arabic, Part III. Georgetown University Press. - The Hans-Wehr Dictionary of Modern Standard Arabic. - Audio and video tapes housed at the Ermal Garinger Academic resources center. - One blank tape. Visit the EGARC web-site www.ku.edu/~egarc/diglib Prerequisites Arabic 310, Part I or the equivalent. New students are required to take a placement test.
Requirements Regular attendance, active in-class participation, assignments, oral discussions and presentations, and four tests
Absences Absent students are responsible for obtaining the material they missed, the assignments required and scheduled for next class.
Homework and Written assignments Students are required to complete all assignments as scheduled and hand them in on time.
Evaluation and Grades Class participation and discussions 15% Presentations 15% Homework 30% Tests 30% Final paper 10%
There will not be make-up exams and exams will not be repeated for absent students unless the student shows certifiable excuse or unless the instructor is contacted ahead of time.
