Course Description
This course is designed to develop students proficiency and communication in Modern Standard Arabic in the four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading (both oral and aural), and Writing. Elementary Arabic introduces students to:

The sound and writing systems of Arabic |

|
Basic grammar |
|
|
Basic vocabulary |
|
|
Basic sentence structure of Arabic |
Students are expected to:

|
Participate in basic conversational exchanges |
|
|
Understand native speakers of Arabic accustomed to dealing with non-native speakers of Arabic |
|
|
Fill out forms, write notes, short letters and compositions describing daily events or personal experiences |
|
|
Read basic texts on familiar topics such as weather, seasons, food, family studies, and friends |
Emphasis is placed on the functional use of the language in the four skills. Cultural aspects are built into the course and will be introduced through audio-visual material.
Ψ Arabic is the main medium of instruction and communication
Ψ After the fifth week, only Arabic is used in class.

Requirements
Regular attendance, active class participation, daily assignments, and four tests and a final.
Absences
While students are not expected to miss classes, a student who does is responsible for contacting the instructor or fellow students to be prepared for the assignments s/he missed and the ones scheduled for the next class.
Homework and Written Assignments
Students are required to complete all assignments on schedule. All written homework must be turned in at the beginning of the class. Late homework is graded but penalized.

Class Participation/Attendance 20%
Tests 30%
Daily homework 30%
Final exam 20%
The final exam is comprehensive. It covers the entire syllabus and tests the fours skills.
There will not be make-up exams and exams will not be repeated for absent students unless the student shows certifiable excuse or unless the instructor is contacted ahead of time.
Students with prior knowledge of Arabic will take a placement test. Students with a disability that might challenge their performance should contact the instructor.
