In September, 2006, I joined KU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering. My research centers on biological processes in environmental engineering, including biological reactor operation and the application of molecular biology tools in water quality analysis. I currently have research projects regarding the cultivation of algae as a source of lipids for biodiesel production, the transfer of antibiotic resistant DNA in biofilm systems, and the fate of synthetic estrogens in wastewater reactors. I am also collaborating with a visitor from Ecuador to test silver-lined ceramic filters for low-cost, decentralized water filtration.
