Short Reports

Select one item from the list of organizations and two from the list of series. Prepare a short factual sheet on each which can be handed out to everyone in class.

Term Papers

Papers should be about 20 pages in length and should deal with an aspect of print propagation (such as the patronage, packaging, presentation, reception of prints of specific prints; the conditions of their production etc.) or broader art historical issues as they relate to a specific set, series, or portfolio of pirnts. Here are a few research ideas beyond those that might be generated by the lists of series and organizations:

Series based on Edgar A. Poe
The Problem of Narrative in Gauguin's Noa Noa
Origins of the Limited Edition Portfolio
Julius Meier-Graeffe as publisher
Ambroise Vollard as publisher.
Auguste Delâtre as publisher

Other Goals

If we keep track of ideas that come up in the course of the semester it would be useful to assemble a short document "Sentences on Prints in Series" modelled on Field's "Sentences on Printed Art."

We will make a few forays into the large arena of the "the art of the book" but will focus primarily on print series -- we might try to verbalize how and why these differ.
