Mary Lynn E Hamilton, University of Kansas (hamilton@ukans.edu), Vicki LaBoskey, Mills College (laboskey@hotmail.com).

Applications should include a: 1) 3-5 page, double-spaced overview of the dissertation, describing its purposes, methods, and significance; 2) one-half page abstract of the study; and 3) letter of recommendation from the dissertation advisor or another faculty member.  This letter should indicate where the student is in the dissertation process and how the student could contribute to and benefit from the seminar.

The application review process will use the following criteria: 1) clarity of presentation; 2) a well-framed research question or problem and some discussion of what it means and why it is worth studying; 3) an indication of what is already known about this questions or problem and how others have thought about it; 4) a realistic and appropriate methodology and a discussion of how the methodology will help the researcher address his or her problem or issue; 5) a clear statement of how the data will be analyzed; 6) if appropriate, preliminary findings; and 7) a discussion of how the study will contribute to theory and practice.  All applicants will receive written comments from the faculty who reviewed their proposals.

Division K will cover the cost of meals during the seminar.  While some modest financial aid will also be available to offset other costs, students are encouraged to seek support from their home institutions.  Applications should be postmarked by December 15, 2002 for first consideration and should be sent to: Mary Lynn Hamilton, University of Kansas, School of Education, JRPearson Hall Lawrence, Kansas 66045. Awards will be announced by the end of January 2003.  If you have any questions or need further information about the seminar, contact Mary Lynn Hamilton (hamilton@ku.edu).
