HAGHIA TRIADA

LM IB context

Schoep 2002, 179: according to Caratelli, tablets 1-50 and 58-84 are thought to come from the Villa and 85-154A from the Casa del Lebete (from the way they were found, probably stored in a wooden box). The joins 23+150 and 70+151 cast some doubt on the accuracy of these findspots, however. According to Militello, HT 85-113 come from Casa room 7 (excavated in 1904) and 114-121 and 129-131 (1912 excavations) come from Casa room 9.

In the Villa, tablets come from at least 5 locations: HT 24 was found in the South-West Quarter, on the threshold between corridor 9 and vestibule 26, along with 45 noduli; 11 tablets (including HT 1-5) were discovered in the North-West Quarter, in the area of portico 11 and room 13, also 1000+ nodules (inscribed and uninscribed); some very fragmentary tablets were found in room 72; thus the majority of well preserved tablets come from magazine 59 where they were found in and between 2 pithoi placed against the south wall (magazine 59 is part of a large storage area consisting of different units destined for the storage of different commodities: liquids in rooms 8, 61, 17), dry commodities (in rooms 58, 59, 5), and more valuable commodities such as metals (ingots, fragments of gold) (in rooms 57, 7, access to which was more restricted). Room 57a produced a bronze double ax and a steatite cup; room 7 contained five stacks of nineteen bronze ingots; and room 7a yielded bronze statuettes and gold foil.

PH(?) 31 (q.v.) is probably also from HT.

b.1, 5: the repetition of *188 might also relate to the repetition of the number 1: SU-PU2-*188 1 =? *86+*188 JJ; *86+*188 also appears on KH Wc 2058, 2059-2062, 2117b, and *188+*86 appears on HT 26

Brent Davis proposes a new interpretation (18 August 2009; with slight modification by JGY):

JGY: This interpretation has several merits: 1) it confirms the value of 1/8 for the fraction F;
2) logogram PA occurs elsewhere (HT 10, 25, 85), the last possibly making the total (of VIR?) on side b 10, not 11;
3) logogram PA3seems to operate similarly; see the notes to HT 9b.1, HT 34.6, HT 103.2; cf. HT 132.2.
4) and *86+*188 now seems more like a transaction term (see its frequent occurrence on roundels [HT Wc 3009, 3013; KH Wc 2058-2062, 2097, 2109, 2117) -- is related to *337+*118 on Wc 2056, 2057?

a.1, b.4: *123 may be the same as Linear B AROM (herbs, condiments, spices), but here given a phonetic value; for TA-I-*123, see HT 39.1.
a.3, b.5: DI-NA-U appears on KN Zb 27: DI-NA-U VINa 17 (cf. the heading here, TE VINa). On HT 16.1-2, it is the 2nd word in the heading, the 1st, KA-KU-PA, appears on two roundels, HT Wc 3015 and 3016, contributing CYP. JGY guesses that DI-NA-U is a place known at least for its VIN (cf. HT 25, where it apparently also contributes personnel), and KA-KU-PA is the person responsible for the contributions of CYP.
a.6-b.1: assuming KU-RO = total, J=1/2, & E=1/4: the total 29+3J+2E equals 31, not 31+J+E. If b.1 recorded JE (JGY sees a possible 1 followed by a probable E), then PA3 might denote a correction: WA-JA-PI minus JE (see HT 8, Davis's interpretations & notes).

Schoep 2002, 78-9, 181: DU-*123-A was probably meant to precede U-*34-SI GRA; 108: probably a list of GRA by people. The large numbers and the mention of a deficit (400 owed, from a total 1154 expected) imply these are incoming commodities. The amounts are (more or less) multiples of 57 (12*57 = 684, 7.02*57 = 400), "implying an underlying tax system".

the tablet was found on the threshold between corridor 9 and vestubule 25, along with 45 noduli; the total of wool mentioned here is more than 36.5 units, so it is possible that the noduli refer to the units mentioned in the tablet (Schoep 2002, p. 196).

side a deals with wool; KU-PA3-RI-JA looks like an adjective derived from KU-PA-RI, perhaps a place near Petras (PE 1); PA-SA-RI-JA looks like another adjective, derived from a hypothetical *PA-SA-RI (cf. PA-SE-JA [HT Wc 3001, 3002], I-PA-SA-JA [KH 10.3])
side b deals with commodities apparently measured by *118

Godart 1984, 125, suggests that VIR+KA are women; Schoep 2002, 113, n. 81 points out that Itaja may be a woman's name; actually, the names here almost all end in -A (Arudara, Pura2, Widina; and Jaqif ends in the feminine form of QI.

because of the different types of vessels, the tablet may be record the contents of an actual storeroom (Schoep 2002, 128)

the vase-logograms in question (but see the actual drawings of the logograms: click here):
*402VAS conical vessel?, *410VAS tripod cauldron, *415VAS jar without handles, and *416VAS jar with handles on the side (piriform amphora?).

.1: [•]-TI-SA may be I-TI-SA; in any case, TI-SA is hapax legomenon here (cf. RA-TI-SE on HT 6b.2; RU-MA-TA-SE on ZA 20.3)
.3: KA-RO-PA3, Monti 2008 compares KA-RO with Hurrian hiari "gold" and hiarohhe "golden" (whence Greek khrusós) and passive ending -i/o/u+bade, so that Linear A KA-RO-PA = "of gold" or "gilded."

Duhoux 2000-2001 (and cf. Perna 2003):
1. quoting Goold & Pope 1955: xii: this is a very important tablet, whose half dozen words "collectively ... provide a sure touchstone on which any theory which professees to identify words may be subjected to a decisive test."
2. the heading is either I-TI-SA or I-TI-SA PU-KO, or (more likely) is modifying *410VAS, the (undoubtedly) bronze tripod cauldrom (and thus means "bronze"?)
3. the next 3 vessels (plus the two lone words, SA-JA-MA and KI-DE-MA-*323-NA) form a second group of vessels, large but smaller than the tripod cauldron
4. the last 3 vessels are small, look like versions of conical cups, and are very numerous
5. the two lone words, SA-JA-MA and KI-DE-MA-*323-NA may modify the last vessels of the second group, perhaps, like PU-KO referring to their material
6. it is likely that SU-PU and SU-PA3-RA are related: SU-P/SU-P3 with A-RA perhaps an ending (diminutive?)
7. the list here is like the inventory of a magazine (cf. HT magazine 15 with 100s of conical cups [cf. the last 3 mentions of *402], about 50 other vessels and 2 bronze basins)
8. attempts to identify the words have not been convincing (Neumann suggested SU-PU is related to Greek σιπυ'η. Best and others saw Semitic words in the vases and suggested that the two lone words were Linear A for silver and gold)

JGY:
1. for +SU-PU (*415VAS+SU-PU), cf. +SU-PA3-RA (*402VAS+SU-PA3-RA), line 5, +SU (*413VAS+SU) on MA 10.a, and SU-PU2[ on HT 63.1, SU-PU-*188 on HT 8b.1, and QE-SU-PU on HT 87.4 and TU-SU-PU on HT 49a.7
2. for +QA-PA3 (*402+QA-PA3), cf. +KA-RO-PA3 (*416+KA-RO-PA3) line 3.
3. for PA-TA-QE, cf. PA-TA-NE on HT 94b.1, HT 122a.6, and HT We 1019, and PA-TA-DA-DU-PU2-re[ on HT Zb 160 and PA-TA-DA[ on PH? 31a.4
4. SA-JA-MA is hapax legomenon here, but compare cf. ]SA-JA-TI (HT 39.3), written by the same hand, and SA-*323-MI (HT 29.3)
5. for KI-DE-MA-*323-NA, compare KA-DU-MA-NE (HT 29.6; is it coincidence that, 2 lines earlier [HT 29.4] there occurs SA-*323-MI?)
6. the parallels given above suggest that the words written above the vases and especially the two lone words SA-JA-MA and KI-DE-MA-*323-NA are not the names of the vases, but represent something else, perhaps provenience or personnel

.2: Here, a logogram is followed by a word; Duhoux (in Morpogo-Davies and Duhoux 1984: 20-21, 59 n. 27) suggests that this is an example of "double writing," where a logogram is spelled out, and, if so, KI-KI-NA should mean fig. It has also been suggested that the logogram NI derives acrophonically from a (Minoan) word "nikuleon," attested by Hesychius for "figs" (G. Neumann, "Nikuleon," Glotta 40 (1962) 51-54). Perhaps the two terms characterize "fresh" and "dried" figs or "green" and "black" figs. Another occurrence of "double writing" might occur on KN Za 19: MI-NA, where MI-NA might be the word for *118 ; cf. ZA 21a.7 where this may recur.
.4-6: probably a list of people by name
.4 & .5: KU-PA3-PA3/NU; cf. KU-ZU-NI (HT 85a.4) & KU-PA-ZU (KH 5.3-4); PA-HA-RE on HT 29.2 and ZA 10b.5-6.

2: for PA3 as a logogram without a number, see HT 9b.1.
4: That DA-KU-NA would not be related to DA-KU-SE-NE seems unlikely, but JGY has no explanation for how the numbers might work.
5: Schoep (1994-95, 71, n. 60), taking a lead from GORILA (which suggests separating PA3 from DA-KU-SE-NE), implies the following:
PA3
DA-KU-SE-NE[ 6 J
DA-KU-NA 1
KI-RA ("balance") 5 J
Using Davis's interpretation of HT 8, we would then expect PA3 DA-KU-SE-NE to anticipate an omission of 6J, but an addition of 1 on line .4-5 results in a new balace/omission of 5J.

The numbers here are interesting (even if they do not quite total KU-RO's 160): each unit of *327 could be distributed per pair VIR. The number 10 recurs: KO-JA 10, JA-*345 10, *306-TU 2 + *327-JU 8 = 10. The second list, following TI 7 consists of names that rely on rare signs: JA-*345 (hapax here, see below), *306-TU (*306 possibly MUL, see below), *327-JU (*327 repeated from line .1?); could they form some group?
.1: *327 may be AES (B *140; Palaima 1988: 326); cf. HT 14a.1-2.

a.7-9: the total (KU-RO) of OLIV, 93 J is correct.

assuming that there is a ratio between olives and *308 (amounts given and owing totaled), it is most clearly expressed in the entry for DA-TU (a.6-7), as 15 OLIV : *308 4E + JE (=5) or 3:1. This seems right, since the ratio between the total amount of olives 93J (93.5) is 3 times the total of *308 (25H+6[, or 31H, if H is 1/6). For the entry for SA-RU, 1/3 of 16 OLIV = 5 1/3; for *308, the total seems to be 4 + 3/4 + A[; if A[ = 7/12, the ratio is preserved. For the entry for PU-VINa, the fractions for *308 (both 8 something and after KI-RO) are not really legible, but, assuming GORILA reads them correctly: 1/3 of 31 1/2 OLIV is 10 1/2; for *308, the total is 8 3/4, which implies that X is 1 3/4 (or, if 1X is again assumed, as stated in the entry for KI-TA-I, then 3/4). For the entry for KI-TA-I, 1/3 of 31 OLIV is 10 1/3; for *308, the total seems to be 8 1/4 1 X or 9 1/4 X; if X is 13/12, the ratio is preserved.

Finally, the totals for *308 KI-RO:
the first column totals 25H or 24 J 3E A or (if J=1/2, E=1/4) 25+1/4+A, implying that H = 1/4+A (if A is 7/12, as above, then H = 10/12 or 5/6); there is probably a discrepancy here.

the second column totals 6 = 1+X+X+2J+2E, or 2+1/2+2X = 6, or 2X = 3 1/2, or X = 1 3/4, the value adduced in the calculations for PU-VINa's *308. There is obviously a discrepancy in either the entry for PU-VINa or, more likely, for KI-TA-I.

an alternative arrangement of side b, based on the Balance Ledger type of account tablet, would presume allocations of 20 units from *188, with 1 unit miscounted, and a series of small units owed amounting to 5 2J 2E F L2 = 6 5/8 L2, of which 5[ survives.

a.2-3: I-QA-*118 recurs only on HT 44, also heading a list of almost the same commodities
b.4: the rule separates at least two or three lists from the "grand total"
b.4: PO-TO-KU-RO 452 probably means "grand total"; it probably adds the numbers originally on the reverse, since it is 79 less than the total of the surviving numbers on both obverse and reverse.

since A-SE may be a place (cf. HT 93 & HT 115) and since QA-RE-TO is a hapax legomenon and thus probably a person, the tablet may have listed 5 *319 at A-SE, QA-RE-TO being entrusted with 27 sheep and therefore a shepherd (Linear B often lists shepherds and their "handlers")
.1: *319 (like a capital I) is preceded by a small dot low in the field; if the dot is a divider, then *319 is a logogram (see the notes to HT Zd 155-157).

since *86 seems to designate a certain kind of personnel (see HT 94), I have moved it and its associated signs up into the logogram column

there are probably several separate paragraphs here: surely .1-.2 (headed U-*34-SI), .2-.3 (same heading), probably 2 or 3 more paragraphs in lines .3-.5, and a conclusion beginning in .5 KA-PA

HT Zd 155, 156, 157 (HM 52, 53, 54) (GORILA IV: 130-135), graffiti on plaster, E wall of room WA (Villa, Light Well 54).

P. Militello (email to "AegeaNet," 1 Nov 2006) reexamined the notebooks and drawings of Stefani & Halbherr (1903 and 1913) and provides the following information:

1) The graffiti were written on the east well (as stated explicitly by Stefani, and implicitly by Paribeni, when he says that they were written by a man seated on the lowest step of the staircase along the East wall)

2) at a rather low level, perhaps 20 or maximum 40 cm high (both for what I said before and because they were painted on the dark ground, that is to say on the dark dado or the above red band (both around 20 cm high) which decorated this wall (pace Cameron 1965, who states that HT 156 should be at eye-level or at the level of a seated person due to a probable beam (?) impression)

3) before the decoration was made, if Cameron 1965 is right in saying that the paint had washed in the graffito.

4) The three inscriptions (HT Zd 155, 156, 157) should be written as a sequence, not the one above the other, since there was no space for such a disposition.

The sequence in the notebook 1903 is HT 157, 156, 155, exactly the opposite of the order of publication.

Moreover, Stefani, describing Room 54, says that 2 inscriptions were found. This statement lets me think that two of these inscriptions should be written in sequence, so that they could be considered as only one inscription.

The only candidates are HT 157 and 156, or HT 156 and 155

JGY: since 157 has considerable space to the left of the inscription and its signgroup ends near the right break in the plaster; and since 156 begins at the left break of the plaster and has a small space at the right break; these two inscriptions should then form one inscription.
Inscription 155 has a short space at the left and right edges of the plaster.

So, I suggest the 3 inscriptions were written along a roughly single line, starting with HT 157 to the North, immediately followed by HT 156, and ending with HT 155.

HT Zd 155 (HM 52) (GORILA IV: 130-131)

A-JU • NA-MA-MA-TI-TI-*319

Notes to HT Zd 155-157:
  • JGY: The repetitions on 155 of MA-MA & TI-TI seem too much. Since -TI-TI recurs elsewhere (as in the second statement, and on HT 96) but MA-MA does not recur in the Linear A corpus, it might be preferable to read the 2nd word simply as NA-MA-TI-TI.

  • JGY: The similarity between WI-JA- and A-JU may imply some sort of prefix; -TI-TI may be related to the ending -TE, "of/from" (Valério 2007). It would be tempting, therefore, to interpret the two statements as "prefix + of/from-SU-MA-T" and "prefix + of/from NA-MA-T."

  • It is tempting to see 156's NE and *319 as the same sign, and to see it here simply as some kind of divider (Collis & Valério). *319 does, however, seem to function as a logogram on HT 132 (its only other occurrence in Linear A). It recurrence on both inscriptions supports its function as a logogram (Miguel Valério).

  • JGY: If the NA on 155 were also like NE / *319 (it is badly preserved), we could then compare 157 WI-JA-SU-MA-TI-TI with 155 A-JU (NA-)MA-MA-TI-TI (and with MA-TE-TI [PK 1.8], TI-TI-MA [PH Wc 40a retrograde?]) and with JA-SU-MA-TU (SY Za 2a)

  • M. Pope, BSA 55, 1960, 204-205, sees a geometric arithmetical progression: unit times one and one-half of preceding unit: 1, 1 1/2, 2 1/4, 3 3/8
    1
    1.50*1 = 1.50 = 1 1/2
    1.50*1.50 = 2.25 = 2 1/4
    1.500*2.250 = 3.375 = 3 3/8
    1.5000*3.3750 = 5.0625 = 5 1/16
    therefore: J = 1/2; E = 1/4; F = 1/8; K = 1/16

  • If one ignores NE/*319, the series looks much like an Old Kingdom Horus-Eye series of fractions (1 = 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 ...) (thanks to M. Gardner, message sent several years ago to "ANE").

  • J.P Olivier 1992a: TA-JA = five, and K = 1/16 [Collis: why ^Mwould the scribe switch to writing out "five"?].

  • If one accepts *319 as logogram, one gets a fairly normal inscription (thanks to Miguel Valério):
    WI-JA-SU-MA-TI-TI*3191
    *3191 J
    *3192 E
    *3193 E F
    *319TA-JA [= 5] K [
    A-JU • NA-MA-TI-TI*319

  • R. Stieglitz ("Minoan Mathematics or Music?" The Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists 15, 1978, 127-32) relates these fractions to musical ratios and therefore tones. For a discussion of HT Zd 156 and its relationship to music, see J.G. Younger, "The Mycenaean Bard: The Evidence for Sound and Song," in EPOS: Reconsidering Greek Epic and Aegean Bronze Age Archaeology, edited by R. Laffineur and S. Morris (Liège and Austin, 2007), 71-78.

Presumably the fraction [1/8] refers to the weight of the stone weight, 8.40 gr; if this is 1/8, the unit would be 67.2 gr, which is very close to Petruso's unit of 61 gr (derived from actual balance weights: Petruso 1992: 63) or 2.5 Q (in the Mycenaean system; Q = 3.36 gr).
