Department of Religious Studies
Centennial Celebration
Featuring Professor Elaine Pagels

The KU Department of Religious Studies celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001. As part of the celebration, the department hosted two book seminars based on bestselling books by Professor Elaine Pagels, Harrington Sear Paine Professor of Religion at Princeton University.

The first seminar, led by religious studies professor S. Daniel Breslauer and former KU philosophy professor R. Shafer-Landau, focused on Pagels' Adam, Eve and the Serpent.

The second seminar, led by religious studies professor Paul Mirecki, focused on Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels.

On April 26, 2001, the department hosted a capacity crowd of 800 guests at a lecture by Professor Pagels, who was introduced by Professor Mirecki. Pagels spoke on the ancient political and theological relations between the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of John.
